the lowly and lovely clothespin.
Monday was always washday for my grandmother, and then later, my mom. Clothes, bed linens, socks, wringer washer, clothesline, wicker washbasket...
and of course, the essential clothespin...
of unchanging design...homey, simple, basic, endlessly versatile and useful...costing pennies each, even now, and PRICELESS!
And good for clothes pin dolls.
ReplyDeleteJoan,I'd never seen these un-clippy clothespins before this year! I guess I have been living under a rug...
ReplyDeleteI used to hang clothes out on the line for my mom in the dark ages. It was always a chore I hated... But now I wish I had a clothesline- the yummy smell of sheets when brought in to fold... But I also remember stiff towels and shirts from being frozen in the dead of winter!! haha I think my mom was in heaven when she finally got a dryer. I bought some of these pins last week at an antique shop. too cute. :-) Sue
Just like the clothespins my Mom had when I was a girl. I love hanging clothes on the line - there is nothing like the fresh smell of clothes hung outside to dry.
ReplyDeleteAnother of my favorite curiousities that always came home from the markets with me. I love the painted ones with years of flaking & disregard to them...
ReplyDeleteI love those old clothespins. I bought a bag of them at an auction years ago...they're in the bag with the wire that hangs on the clothesine while you putting your laundry up. I need to hang clothes out more often, thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteGreat clothespins. I love to hang out clothes and do so all summer long. I don't have any pins like this however! They are so cute! Have a wonderful VTT!
ReplyDeletewe never hung clothes on a line but my next door neighbor did...always wondered if the nice clothes every got soiled from bird droppings??? crazy thought i know, but i wouldn't want to take the chance.
ReplyDeleteHow nice to think you can take something so simple and make such an interesting post. Great job.
ReplyDeleteSimplicity at its finest! I was just thinking about clothes lines last night. How funny is that? Growing up, everyone was in their front yards visiting and the back yard was for the clothes line. Of course, the kids loved to play in the sheets hanging on the line!

Monday is still washday for me. And where would we be without our clothespins? My mother used this kind.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I see clothespins, I think of helping Grandma wash clothes in the wringer washer, and then hanging them outside, and if it was chilly out, when we brought the clothes back in they were stiff as a board!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures!
Oh do I ever remember Monday being wash day!!! We used the SAME wash water for ALL the laundry - - - so you started with the whites, then the lights, then the mediums, then finally the darks!!! Old ringer washer and two big metal wash tubs.
ReplyDeleteI was TOO YOUNG to do it, mind you - - - but I do REMEMBER it!!!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! I love seeing all the neat things everyone else is finding and what they're going with them.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Thanks for joining in on the party Joan! I got started a LITTLE early but I don't think folks will mind much at all! Have a great Thursday!
ReplyDeletei love your dolly pegs..i've collected a few over the years too :)
ReplyDeleteGreat minds...I just painted the clothesline poles I brought from my other house ( yup, I cut the metal off at the ground with the Sawzall and then had new 3 ft sections welded on- got some new line and plan to string them up Thursday...I can almost smell the clean sheets now....ahhhh.
ReplyDeleteWhat neat pictures!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful are those!!! Just recently my grandmother gave me some of hers. Perhaps a strange present but I love them. The pins she gave me were the ones she has been using for over 70 years (she's turning 90 next year).
ReplyDeleteFun memory and fun the way you photographed the clothespins.
ReplyDeleteblessings,
barbara jean

I have seen these clothespins in pictures only, but I can see how they make excellent dolls for mother's little helper.
ReplyDeleteI can smell the clean cotton. Those pics would look fabulous in sepia tone hung in a laundry room... conjures amazing memories.
ReplyDeleteOh my, I love the clothespins. I really don't like doing laundry, but I would do it just to touch those - they're beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove these - and the photos :)
ReplyDeletePS Just letting you know that I tagged you on my blog today :)

ReplyDeleteThanks for participaing in Thrifty Thursday this week! I was late in posting the links, so forgive me. It's my fault that you may have some late visits.
Thanks for partcipating. Next week I will be back on a good schedule!
I just love your clothespins and all the history they have with them. I bought some new and am going to paint them up like people...I have some of the new spring type now...and clothes that need to come in off the line!!
ReplyDeleteI love old clothespins, especially in this shape.. the simplicity of life.. but now this thing is hard to get especially here at my side of the world..
ReplyDeleteHappy VTT & have a great day!
Well, I have to almost to a load everyday to keep up with things, but Monday is my BIG laundry day, don't know why I picked it, maybe it's one of the 10 commandments :0) Love the pictures of the clothes pins, great shots.
ReplyDeleteLots of memories flooding back! I loved to run through the clothes my mother hung on the line when I was a child. I loved the smell and when the clothes and sheets were damp, it felt so cool in the hot summer sun!!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures and post! :-)
xoxo

I believe I have been to your Grayslake place...who knows, maybe we even met. I always try to visit some kind of antiquey place when I visit my son who lives outside Chicago. Your blog is a delight and I would love to add it to my "take me away" blogroll, with your permission. ~ Lynn
ReplyDeleteThose are the pins that I used at my grandmother's home in Nebraska. They are fabulous, aren't they!
